2016 USA Election
Anyone following the Democrat and Republican parties and their candadates?
So the first state is down with Cruz and Clinton winning Iowa. Although Clinton and Sanders basically were tied at 50 percent each.
So, any thoughts as this next election unfolds? Discuss.

Re: 2016 USA Election
I think Sanders would have won Iowa if six counties in there weren't decided by coin toss. Conveniently, all six of the coin tosses were in favor of Clinton.
On the Republican side, people are starting to drop out which is good. Hopefully Trump just starts a slow descent from here and crashes and burns, but that probably won't happen.

Re: 2016 USA Election
From what I read, even if all of the counties were given to Sanders, he still would have been slightly behind Clinton. The amount of delegates awarded will be pretty similar, anyway.
Yeah, it would be fantastic if Trump starts losing popularity, but we'll see.
Right now, I'm not sure who I would vote for. Out of the Republican side, I would have considered Rand Paul, and maybe Rubio or possibly Kasich. I might vote third party, but I'll have to wait and see depending on how the primaries go.

Re: 2016 USA Election
So it looks as if there is no way around it. Trump will be the GOP nominee. Although, from what I've seen so far this year, I would expect anything when it comes to politics.
If Trump does become President, will the USA be a dangerous place to live as some are suggesting?

Re: 2016 USA Election
According to a projection by Helmut Norpoth, which uses a model that is purportedly fairly accurate, Donald Trump has a 97-99% chance of winning if he gains the Repub nomination. I don't know how accurate this is, but O_O
I think that it could be bad, I don't think that he would nearly get done as much as he wants to, just because the seats in Congress could get shuffled a bit, and he might not be the greatest at working with them.
Interestingly, Western Illinois University predicts that Bernie Sanders will win the presidential election. They've never been wrong in predicting the winner of a race (they started in 1975).

Considering it looks unlikely Sanders will even get the Democratic nomination, I think Western Illinois University is about to lose its streak.
As for Trump, oi vey. The man genuinely scares me. He's a bombastic crazed racist idiot with a bad haircut and somehow he looks appealing to the majority of the American people. What has the world come to?
If he's President, I genuinely don't know what will happen. I don't trust the guy. He lies all the time, he sues and gets sued constantly, he goes around acting like a child, calling people ugly, and acting as though sweating somehow makes you unqualified to be President. He calls every attack against him a lie, even though most of them are true. He calls himself a great businessman, even though he's gone bankrupt four times. And how does he explain it? He says he used the laws to his advantage. Do we really want to elect someone who prides themselves on cheating the system? Not to mention, those tactics don't work when you're running a country.
He's supported by white supremists, he's a liar, he insults people non-stop for positively zero reason, he promises way more than he can deliver, and estimates say he'll drive us further into debt. He's not even the tough guy he claims he is. He backed down from a debate because there was a reporter there he thinks is biased against him! I just don't see any appeal whatsoever in this guy.

That's the mystery. What's appealing about him?
So what are you going to do, Woody, if he's elected?

Make political jokes with my friends.
Seriously though there's not much we can do, us non-voting age people on this board, but wait for 2020 when we will be able to vote.

Since when is silly language?
As for voting, I think it is still most definitely important for those who can vote to get out and do it, because resigning the win to Trump is only going to help him win. The only way Trump isn't the nominee is if the field narrows and people get out and vote. Unless something drastic happens and Trump suddenly drops, that is.

It is only in Countie's book.
Even then, it looks rather hopeless. I see a lot of PICKY VOTERS, voting for candidates that no one knows about, or not voting at all if the person is a inexperienced first term senator. *glares at no one in particular*

Re: 2016 USA Election
Oh man, I'm so happy I can vote next election. Only by a few days, but still.
So far I think I'm going to vote Sanders. I would in the primaries, but I can't (at least in my state), so if he gets the nomination, I'd rather him. Do I think he's going to get the nomination? ..honestly not sure:P I see more support for him in my life than anyone else (besides maybe Cruz), but Michigan apparently will decide a lot, and he's like 47-53 with Clinton right now. If he loses MI, who knows.
Personally, I find myself leaning much more left than right, so if Trump or Cruz (even though almost everyone around me supports him) were nominated, I still wouldn't vote for them. But if Sanders doesn't get the nomination..I honestly don't know who I would vote for. I just don't like Hillary Clinton. If it's Clinton and Trump, I might consider going to college overseas. JK.
Seriously, I don't understand why people keep saying they'd leave the country if so and so won. Here's the thing, people: All of these candidates have big dreams. Most won't ever get through Congress. I support Sanders, but I don't think he can give Americans free college. And I am 90% sure that Trump will not actually get to build his wall. Though he may get us all nuked because he's a jerk.

Re: 2016 USA Election
It doesn't look like Sanders will get the nomination, thank gosh. This is such a bizarre election. On the extreme right we have a tactless, blithering, racist and sexist idiot. On the extreme left a socialist!? We can't have an openly racist bigot for president and we can't have a socialist for president and on both counts it's flaming obvious.
If you look at Sanders' plans, they don't add up. According to NBC he's counting on saving piles of money on things like pharmaceutics, more than is spent on pharmaceutics. That's not a savings, that's playing with numbers. Sanders is just the candidate who reliably shows up getting the people's support because hes' promising the most candy.
At this point, I still kind of hope Cruz or someone wins the nomination. Anyone, anyone, anyone but that. But that hope is less like a hope and more like denial.

Re: 2016 USA Election
Meh, I'd rather have Sanders than someone like Clinton, who I don't trust whatsoever to be our president after how many "scandals" she's been involved in, or Trump, who, besides the fact that he's an idiot, has no political experience whatsoever.
Ted Cruz is the Zodiac Killer, so I'm not going there. And he's definitely not getting the nomination, at least if Rubio and Kaisch stay in the race. Honestly if those two dropped out, he might have a chance; after all, he's often not too far behind Trump in most of the polls and with the votes of Rubio and Kaisch with him, he could probably make it. But Trump is definitely getting the nomination:/ At this point, it's the lesser of two evils to vote Democrat, in my opinion, though most everyone around me disagrees.
This entire election has me reminded of this quote: (and no, I have NOT read the book it came from, I just like the quote)
"I felt free and chained at the same time - like one feels just before election, when all the crooks have been nominated and you are beseeched to vote for the right man."

Re: 2016 USA Election
That's thing thing, people don't like her because of things like scandals, most of which are run into the ground so much in part because people love to hate Hillary. Even if those "damn emails" we've been talking of for months and months were classified at the time (as I understand it they were not) we're looking at the wrong thing. Things like scandals are irrelevant. What matters is can he or she lead, are they capable. Hillary has a good Isis plan, a far firmer grasp of economics than Bernie, she has tons of political experience, and she has a number of accomplishments from being the most traveled Secretary of State in history to working with Vladimir Putin to lower both countries' nuclear weapons.
Now, for me it comes down to who's pro life and Trump claims to be pro life. Or has claimed to since a few months before the primaries. Which means, I guess, I'll have to vote for him because even if it's just to win approval he may persist in being pro life and you can't vote for someone who's going to murder babies. I realize you don't agree abortion is murder but that's my viewpoint. All the same, if it comes down to it, I wonder if I'll be able to make myself vote for him. Ugh. It's not like he'd win though, Hillary would squash him like the bug he is and I'd be almost glad.
Nifty quote, I see your point.

Re: 2016 USA Election
Honestly, if Trump was nominated, I couldn't vote for any of the candidates. It's sad that I won't be able to vote in this election though. I couldn't ever support Trump because of who he is and what he does. And I could never vote for Clinton or Sanders because of their views on most things but especially their views on abortion. I prioritize social issues such as abortion and marriage above other things so if a candidate doesn't match those things then I could never vote for them, even if I agreed with everything else. I think I will vote 3rd party most of the time when I can vote. People say it is a waste of a vote but I disagree. If everyone actually voted for who they agreed with the most and who they liked, then casting a 3rd party vote would be worthwhile.

4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.
5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
Why don't you listen to the HOLY BIBLE and RESPECT you're authorities?

Re: 2016 USA Election
If these were our authorities, you might have a point there. However, currently, the candidates we are discussing are a bombastic billionaire, a former first lady, and a senator from a state in which none of us live. Not authorities. These three are campaigning to become authorities, and I believe God would have us examine them with intense scrutiny to determine which of them would be the most godly leader.
It's also worth noting that the American system of government is different from the kingdoms and empires of biblical days. In the American system, the President's power is given to him by the people, not by his lineage or his military strength. That also means that while the people have given him authority over matters of government, they also have authority over him, to take back that power and replace him. Just some thoughts.
Also, *your. Sorry, Grammar Nazi here.

Just a interesting observation.... I don't keep up with politics but have noticed that Trump and Winston Churchill have a trait in common. That is that they can say whatever they want and people still seem to like him.
For example when Trump first started running he said he wanted to export all the illegal Mexicans and build a wall on the border. He instantly had the support of the majority of Mexican voters.

It is true, however, that Trump has a very loyal fanbase. It's just a very small loyal fanbase, because he's alienated several significant demographics, as well as a fair portion of his own party.
